FAQs

Please read our FAQs page to find out more.

What makes Lancaster Cast Iron different from other cast iron cookware?

Lancaster Cast Iron combines the durability and craftsmanship of traditional cast iron with a lighter, more refined cooking experience. Our skillets are up to 4 pounds lighter than the modern standard cast iron, making them easier to lift, maneuver, clean, and enjoy every day.

Every piece of Lancaster Cast Iron cookware is 100% made in the U.S.A. Based in Pennsylvania, we oversee the entire process, from design and casting to machining, seasoning, and finishing. Keeping production close to home allows us to maintain high standards for quality and craftsmanship while giving each piece the attention to detail it deserves.

The result is cookware inspired by the smooth, lightweight feel of vintage American cast iron, thoughtfully made for today’s kitchen and built to last for generations.

Is Lancaster Cast Iron non-toxic and free from synthetic coatings?

Yes. Lancaster Cast Iron is made without synthetic nonstick coatings or added chemicals. The naturally non-stick cooking surface comes from layers of cooking oil that are heated and bonded to the iron through a process called seasoning. As you continue cooking with your skillet, that seasoning naturally develops and becomes darker, smoother, and more durable.

Does Lancaster Cast Iron come pre-seasoned and ready to cook with?

Yes. Every Lancaster skillet arrives pre-seasoned with two layers of grapeseed oil, so you can start cooking with it right away.
Before your first meal, simply give the skillet a quick wash, dry it thoroughly, and you’re ready to cook. From there, regular cooking will continue to build and strengthen the seasoning.

What size Lancaster Cast Iron skillet is right for me?

The best skillet size depends on how many people you typically cook for and the meals you make most often.

No. 4 Skillet: A compact skillet for small dips or desserts, individual portions, and serving something warm right at the table.
No. 6 Skillet: Great for single-serving meals, grilled cheese, eggs, desserts, and smaller sides.
No. 8 Skillet: Our original and most versatile skillet. It’s a wonderful everyday choice for breakfast, weeknight dinners, roasting, baking, and much more.
No. 10 Skillet: Offers more room for larger proteins, generous meals, frying, and baking.
No. 12 Skillet: Our family-dinner skillet, with plenty of space for one-pan meals, family-style cooking, and serving a crowd.

Not sure where to start? The No. 8 Skillet is our flagship skillet and the size we recommend for most kitchens because it’s easy to handle while being versatile enough for just about any meal.

What should I cook first in my new cast iron skillet?

Your skillet is ready to cook from day one, but foods that use a little oil or fat are especially helpful during the first several uses because they naturally strengthen the seasoning.

Some great first meals include:
Sautéed onions and vegetables
Cornbread
Roasted potatoes
Grilled sandwiches
Pork chops

During your first dozen or so uses, cook with a little extra oil or butter and avoid long cooking times with highly acidic ingredients. The more you cook, the more your skillet’s seasoning will develop.
